Gardenias are highly scented plants, considered by some to be difficult to grow, but well worth the effort when success is achieved.

| While Gardenias are happiest in full sun, they appreciate a little shade in the height of summer. They prefer an acid soil with a pH of between 5 and 6. They prefer high humidity and moist but not over damp soil and cool temperatures at night. They prefer temperature ranges between 65 and 70 degrees during the day and 60 to 62 degrees during the night. Feeding Gardenias is important in order to get the best out of them. This will encourage them to flower. Being ericaceous plants, they need an ericaceous compost similar to Rhododendrons and Azaleas. |
Gardenias can be grown as outdoor or indoor plants. If grown as indoor potted plants they should be kept out of direct sunlight. Give them a daily misting and ensure good ventilation.Gardenias suffer from a number of disease problems which include Canker, Bacterial Leaf Spot, Rhizoctonia Leaf Spot, Sooty Mould, Bud Drop and Mildew.
